Why this wine made the cut…
Atypically, almost austere, yet layered and complex Syrah from a benchmark California producer.
GRAPE VARIETAL(S)
Syrah
100% See-RA
Syrah is widely planted throughout the world, but that was not so until the late twentieth century when Syrah was principally grown in the Rhone Valley and, as Shiraz, in Australia. Stylistically, the Palate Character of Syrah can vary depending on ripeness from a rich Round & Fleshy, Tone & Backbone, to a Powerful & Extracted. The flavors and aromas can also vary with a dark, sometimes sweet, fruit character, varying amount of spice, floral, and earth, and smoke, and meaty aromas and flavors.

Piedrasassi

Santa Maria Valley

Sashi Moorman and his wife Melissa started making wines in 2003 under the Piedrasassi label in Lompoc, CA. They focus on syrah with a nod to Northern Rhône style wines.

Piedrasassi’s vineyards are situated throughout Santa Barbara Country, but the team concentrates on cooler-climate locales and often pick grapes earlier than others to retain acidity and balance. The wines are aged in large 500-liter barrels to minimize the effects of oxygen.

The wines of Piedrasassi have distinctly earthy notes and an aromatic complexity that speaks to their approach and a sense of place.
